Frequently Asked Questions
Do you send emails to verify an address is real?
Absolutely not. Bulk Email Checker is a verification service that performs a deep cleansing SMTP test at best. The service will connect to the mail server, asks if the mail box exists and then disconnects right after receiving the reply. At no point is Bulk Email Checker capable of sending any emails to verify an email address.
What all does Bulk Email Checker remove from my lists?
We can remove dupes, invalid syntax, invalid domain dns, invalid mx dns, disposable addresses, role accounts, spam traps, honey pots, blacklists, catchalls, greylisting, mailbox full and mailbox does not exist.
We can remove anything that may bounce and hurt your sender score, we help you keep your accounts in good standing with the ESP's and email campaigns going to inboxes instead of spam boxes.
Do you offer a free trial?
Unfortunately as a cloud based self serve platform we do not offer a free trial, however we do have a trial package available. It is 1,000 email validations for just $2.95, using this trial package you can fully test all of Bulk Email Checker services at relatively little to no risk involved.
Do I need to leave my computer on if I am using the Bulk Verify system?
All email addresses are validated directly from our cloud servers. Feel free to logout from the website, logoff of the computer, even shut the computer down. Your lists will continue to process 24 hours a day and 7 days a week until completed.
How fast is the Bulk Verify system?
We currently offer 2 different speeds to validate lists using the Bulk Verify system..
1. Regular Speed - The regular speed system costs 1 validations per passed/failed email and can validate around 20,000 addresses per day per list. You are permitted 3 maximum regular speed lists processing taking your validation total if running 3 lists simultaneously to around 60,000 per day.
2. Boosted Speed - The boosted speed system costs 5 validations per passed/failed email and can validate around 200,000 addresses per day. You are permitted 1 maximum boosted speed list processing at any given time. This system basically gives 10x the speed for just 5x the cost.
What all tests are performed on addresses that I verify?
- Addresses are verified for being in a valid RFC 2822 compliant format, if not compliant they are failed for free.
- If using the Bulk Verify System, all addresses are filtered against each other to remove any duplicates in your imported lists for free.
- Addresses are filtered against the list of disposable email address providers and will be failed if found for free.
- Addresses are filtered against your blacklists and if found are failed for free, so you only pay for new never before seen address verification.
- After an address has passed all other tests, we perform a deep cleaning SMTP test to verify the mailbox actually exists on the receiving mail server.
Do you store any of my email addresses?
We do store email addresses in some instances, but only what is necessary for the service of your account. Your imported email lists in the Bulk Verify System are stored until they have completed and you delete them. Failed Addresses are stored in your Blacklists to prevent future validations being used to verify the same address twice, again until you delete them. We do not store any information you do not want us to store, if you delete it from your account it is 100% deleted and unrecoverable.
How long will my files stay on your server if I don't delete them?
All lists are deleted after 90 days regardless if they were processed or not. If you choose to delete a list from your account it is immediately deleted and unrecoverable.
How secure is my information on your servers?
At Bulk Email Checker, we prioritize the security of your personal data with the highest level of industry standards. All data transmitted to our website is protected by Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology, ensuring that your information is encrypted with 256-bit encryption during transit. This means that your data is safeguarded from unauthorized access while being transferred to and from our servers.
Once your data is uploaded, it is stored within isolated, secure containers that are accessible only by your account. Additionally, we apply robust, in-house encryption protocols to all imported lists, employing advanced two-way encryption techniques. This ensures that your data remains confidential and secure, whether at rest or in use. Our commitment to maintaining the highest level of data security means that your information is continuously protected against any potential threats.
How do I download my list after it has completed processing?
Once your list has finished processing, a new "Export" button will appear in the top left corner of the list on the Bulk Verify page. Clicking this button will open a dropdown menu with various export options specific to your list.
The available export options include:
- All Emails: Exports all email addresses in the list.
- Passed Emails: Exports only the emails that have successfully passed validation.
- Failed Emails: Exports only the emails that failed validation.
- Unknown Emails: Exports only the emails with an unknown validation status.
If you are processing a multi-column CSV spreadsheet, your exported files will retain the original structure and data, but with two additional columns appended to the end:
- Status: Indicates whether each email address passed, failed, or has an unknown validation status.
- Details: Provides specific reasons for the status assigned to each email address.
Why are some of the addresses I verify returned as unknown?
Not every mail server is compatible with Bulk Email Checker's tests, but rest assured that your validations are never consumed for unknown verifications. We have 3 main types of mail servers that will reply as "Unknown":
- Catch-all - Catch-all's are mail servers that will accept mail regardless of whether the mailbox exists or not, rendering the SMTP test useless.
- Greylisted - Greylisting is a method to prevent spammers from sending emails by adding an automatic delay and is not compatible with the SMTP test.
- Transient - Transient errors consist of issues in connectivity that are temporary and can be a result of a high mail server load, slow to respond which ends in a timeout and disconnects.
Unfortunately neither Bulk Email Checker nor any other email validation service can validate these addresses, the issue is actually in how the receiving mail server is configured that makes the test inaccurate.
If I send mail to unknown addresses will they count against my Sender Reputation?
It is 100% unknown if these addresses exist or not. Emails are flagged as unknown when the system can not perform a SMTP test on the mail server. If you sent 100 emails to unknown addresses it could result in a 100% delivered campaign or a 100% bounced campaign. Unknown addresses will not consume any validations from your account.
We recommend to only send emails to the passed addresses however if you choose to send to the unknown addresses as well, we advise adding small batches of the unknown addresses while sending emails to the passed addresses and then simply manually handling any bounce events that may occur.
Should I reprocess my Unknown lists over and over?
You can indeed reprocess your Unknown lists over and over in the attempt to pull out more passed/failed addresses. However, not all types of Unknowns are able to be processed.
- Catch-all - Catch-all's will always return the same exact Unknown result.
- Greylisted - Greylisting addresses can possibly respond with a different result when retested.
- Transient - Transient results (Details = "None.") are temporary errors which mean a passed/failed result is possible when retested.
After many times of reprocessing you will experience diminishing returns in which you will no longer retrieve more passed/failed addresses from the list.
I imported a new file, but the system did not recognize all email addresses in the list?
If you have imported a file that contains emails only, we remove all duplicates at the time of import and thus why you don't see all addresses. If you imported a spreadsheet, please contact us as your imported list should have the exact same amount of addresses, you may have an issue with file format.
Where are your servers located?
Bulk Email Checker mainly operates out of New York City. However we have multiple servers located in premium data centers across the USA. Atlanta, San Francisco, Dallas, New York City and Washington DC are the main locations to provide our services fast and reliable worldwide.
What exactly is the 97% deliverability guarantee?
Bulk Email Checker guarantees that when sending email to a eligible Passed list of atleast 100 addresses, there will never be more than a 3% maximum bounce rate.
- List must contain at least 100 addresses and sent within 48 hours of validation completing.
- List must contain the Passed addresses only. Failed and Unknown addresses are not eligible.
- Eligible bounces are invalid (mailbox does not exist) addresses only.
If you feel we have not delivered the service we have guaranteed, please contact us!
Can you provide an invoice for my purchase?
We do provide invoices and they can be found on the settings page. Please scroll down to the bottom of the page to the transaction history section and find the transaction you need an invoice for, then simply click the Print Invoice button for it to be generated for you.
How can I increase my bulk verify max processing limit?
All accounts can process 3 lists simultaneously with 1 of those being a boosted list.
If you purchase 1,000,000 validations or more, Bulk Email Checker will grant your account 5 lists simultaneously with 2 of those being boosted lists.
If you purchase 10,000,000 validations or more Bulk Email Checker will grant your account 10 lists simultaneously with 3 of those being boosted lists. 10 + 3 boosted is our maximum alloted processing limit of any account type. The process limits granted depends entirely on validation package size purchased.
Requests for increases above our 10/3 maximum limit will be reviewed and granted on an individual basis. Please contact us to inquire.

Purchasing 10,000,000 credits or more in a single transaction will increase your hourly quota to 4,000 requests per hour, which is the maximum limit under the Real-time API endpoint.
*For higher concurrency needs, please consider using our Unlimited API endpoint.
Increasing Your Real-time API Threads / Concurrent Connection Limit
All accounts are initially allowed 1 thread / concurrent connection to the Real-time API endpoint.
Purchasing 1,000,000 credits or more in a single transaction will increase your limit to 3 threads / concurrent connections.
Purchasing 10,000,000 credits or more in a single transaction will increase your limit to 5 threads / concurrent connections, which is the maximum limit under the Real-time API endpoint.
*For higher concurrency needs, please consider using our Unlimited API endpoint.
What is the Bulk Email Checker Blacklist?
The Bulk Email Checker blacklist is a internal blacklist which tracks all of the addresses you have processed that returned a failed result. When you validate emails they are filtered against the Bulk Email Checker blacklist and if found, failed for free. This system simply helps save costs by ensuring you only pay to validate a failed address once. You can view/edit all addresses added by browsing to the blacklist section of the left sidebar menu and then selecting Bulk Email Checker. Additionally you can disable this blacklist in your account settings, by clicking the toggle button for the Bulk Email Checker Blacklist Filter.
Why is my Bulk Verify process taking longer than estimated?
The estimated time for completion that we provide is simply an estimate based on the amount of emails in the list and mx server average response times. The only bottleneck in our validation system is the speed in which the receiving mail server that is being validated can respond to our requests. If you are processing a list containing all top name providers such as gmail and etc who respond in just milliseconds, you can expect the list to process quicker than estimated. If your list contains many small private email servers which can take clear up to 120 seconds at which point we timeout, you can expect your list to take longer than estimated.
If your list contains a high rate of Failed or Unknown addresses, this can slow down your list processing speeds as both responses take longer to validate than a Passed response.
If your list is a large list consisting of addresses mainly on the same mail server, Bulk Email Checker may throttle your list to prevent both, damage to our validation servers and service interruptions for other clients.
Why are some of my addresses failed as a Role Account?
Role-based email addresses (like admin@, help@, sales@) are addresses that are not associated with a particular person, but rather with a company, department or group. These addresses are not intended for personal use as they typically include a distribution list of multiple recipients. By default they are considered low quality addresses to send email campaigns to. Role accounts are failed for free by default due to the following reasons
- Prime target for spammers: Easily "harvested" off the internet.
- Senders with a high percentage of role accounts in their list(s) are at a higher risk of getting blocked for using a "harvested" or purchased list with their ESP, such as Mailchimp's Omnivore Detection.
- Role accounts are often used to blacklist senders that get caught sending to "honeypot" spam traps.
- Blacklist providers like Spamhaus will treat any email sent to these addresses as spam by default because they believe it was obtained and used without permission.
- Sending to role accounts increases the risk of spam complaints and negatively affects your Sender reputation.
However, we understand that some clients would indeed like to process role accounts. To accomplish this, please simply turn off the Role Account Filter in your settings and all role accounts will be processed just like any other address.
